Andrei Popoviciu was selected for the 2024 Shortlist with How Europe Outsourced Border Enforcement to Africa.

Andrei Popoviciu is an independent investigative journalist who reports on human rights across Europe, Africa and the Middle East. He uses his academic background in war studies and international human rights and humanitarian law to investigate for international media on how international development, authoritarianism, security, corporate interests and foreign affairs produce fertile ground for rights violations. Andrei combines field reporting, video, audio, photography and OSINT techniques to deeply research stories that focus on revealing injustices and accountability. He has reported from over a dozen countries around the world and has won several international awards for his work and contributions, including the Jan Kuciak Award for Investigative Journalists, De Tegel Award, the Signal Award for Podcasting, the IJ4EU Impact Award. He was a runner-up in the Superscrieri Award in Romania, was nominated for One World Media’s New Voice Award and in 2023 was a Forbes 30 under 30 laurate. Several fellowships and grants supported his work, including BIRN’s Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence, a UN Foundation Press Fellowship to DR Congo, a grant from the Leonard C. Goodman Institute for Investigative Reporting and an Artistic Residency with the Goethe Institute in Ramallah, Palestine.
